CXIII*
A system of signs
and ciphers Man schemes
to perpetuate his thoughts
through sundry ages undreamed--
only for himself
the cicada sings.
*[ Inspired by Ou-yang Hsius' "The Cicada"]
CXXXV
Unlike branches, bark,
limbs, and leaves, roots are
not an appendage of trees--
trees are, in fact, roots themselves...
the exposed portion
of roots... roots sublime.
CCCXLII
Does the tree remain
standing for our eyes
and heart? No! It stands for the
plentitude of its leaves, the
strength of its roots, the
thickness of its bark.
CCCXLIV*
Walk reverently
through this field of grass,
for each of its blades is a
hieroglyph-- in honor
of gods unknown-- by
unknown poets cast.
*[ Inspired by a line from Walt Whitman's "Song of Myself"]
