Sandy Lyne

Strangers

Daddy, I was the son,
the stranger; you,
the stranger, too,
perhaps the two of us
blown together by
different winds.
We both needed words,
but before words, love,
and with love, humor
and affectionate gentleness.
I needed the teacher
in you, to love the teacher
in you. I needed
the suppertime pleasures,
bread, water, and
a family’s kiss.
I needed to stand,
father and son,
shoulder to shoulder
in the wordless wind
and share the mystery
of men on earth.
