Georg Trakl

In Venice

Stillness in nocturnal room.
Silverly the candlestick flickers
Before the singing breath
Of the lonely one;
Enchanting rose-clouds.

Black swarm of flies
Darkens the stony room
And the head of the homeless one
Stares from the agony
Of the golden day.

Motionless the sea fills with night.
Star and black travel
Vanished by the canal.
Child, your sickly smile
Followed me softly into sleep.
