Lament

Youth, out of crystal mouth
Your golden gaze sank into the valley;
Forest's wave red and faded
In the black evening hour.
Evening strikes such deep wounds!

Fear! death's dream-complaint,
Deceased grave and yet
The year looks from trees and deer;
Barren field and soil.
The shepherd calls the frightened flock.

Sister, your blue brows
Beckon softly in the night.
An organ sighs and hell laughs;
And a dread seizes the heart;
That yearns to see star and angel.

Mother must fear for her babe;
The ore resounds red in the shaft.
Lust, tears, stony anguish,
Dark legends of the Titans.
Dejection! lonely eagles lament.
