Georg Trakl

Lament

Sleep and death, the somber eagles,
Swoop nightlong around this head:
The icy wave of eternity
Would engulf the golden image
Of man. On horrible reefs
The purple body is shattered
And the dark voice laments
Over the sea.
Sister of stormy sorrow,
Look, a frightened boat sinks
Under stars,
The silent countenance of night.
