I sling my leg over the edge
of the hot tub's sparkling blue rim,
I fight the sound of splashing
hot water to hear a tree-load of chirps
and cheeps. Up in the green Texas
laurels, bougainvillea of deep magenta
and the ring of fairy duster's red shoots
all announce the birds' fiesta.
Hummers, towhees, sparrows,
cactus wrens and marching doves
create a Mariachi band.
Purple Tulips on our round table
bought for our 17th wedding anniversary
stayed well for over a week, but stems
gave way and blossoms opened so I gathered
them with a piece of thread for at least
another day.
