For a Young Friend

In Kenya
Or even in orchards
There are treasures that will call
Back and forth
To whoever is willing and walking through
Be watchful --
History is so slow

There are also heavy heavy cares
The likes of which no one should ever
Encounter
They will never be valued or praised as they should be
But will only be sworn over
As birds flying low --
Be patient with others
Like the shape of bottles

And if thoughts should become more and more random
Remember that
Soon enough
The prince of drums
Will slowly look up
From across farms and deserts
To bid you come nigh --
Be silent.
