Milkweed butts up against the power
substation's concrete vehicle barrier,
added after 9/11 to supplement
the hurricane fence capped with razor wire.
The gangly plant reaches above the wall,
trying to get its share of
the dawn sun. Under its leaves,
hoping a maintenance man doesn't
get ideas of RoundUp, lie eggs. They wait
for their own Kafka experience of
eventual monarchhood. Their births'
main ambition... a flight to Mexico.
A fluttering black and orange
prayer to the ephemeral.
