  Dane Hebert lives in Reno, Nevada. He is a connoisseur of dining at McDonalds, Burger King and KFC. He occasionally splurges for breakfast at a nearby Denny’s but prefers to eat at home alone. He is a past contributor and appeared in Loch Raven’s premiere issue in 2005. His poetry and writings have also appeared in Hudson View/Skyline, Poems Niederngasse, Spinning’s Magazine, and Mipo, among others.

Fork You

"Some relationships are like trying to eat a bowl of soup with a fork and knife" she said. "It can’t be done. Certain people don’t fit or make sense being together."

Yes, but if you bring the bowl to your mouth, tilt it slowly and sip, you can feed your hunger. Extending the pinkie finger on both hands would show class and good manners.

She then said something about oil and water and that I just wasn’t the right fork for her. A knife straight to the heart and life’s unanswerable secret revealed in a cup of soup du jour.

I wiped my lips, brushed a few tears, folded the napkin delicately and placed it atop the table. I paid the check and left two-words for her gratuitous posterity.
